Students compete in Science Olympiad on teams. They are eligible for individual awards (medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places) and earn points for their teams. Our home state of Oregon is able to send one B Division (middle school) and one C Division (high school) team to the National Science Olympiad tournament. This year that will be held May 22 – 23 at the University of S. California, Los Angeles.

We strive to have a fair tournament for all participants. As such, we encourage participants and coaches to work with the volunteers and State Director to promptly resolve any issues of possible unfairness. Please keep in mind that some volunteers are experts in their events and some are simply helpful people who care. Politely explaining an event rule often goes a long way towards resolving issues. For issues that cannot be resolved this easily or may affect other teams, a written appeal form should be submitted by the coach to the State Director as soon as possible. No appeals or score review will be taken after 1 hour after the closing ceremony; this is the same window of time in use for the National Science Olympiad tournament. If appeal or score review results in a change of place or points, new medals and/or trophies may be awarded, but medals and/or trophies that were given at the Closing Ceremony do not need to be returned. Evidence verification for appeals/score review may take up to 3 days to process.

Please join me in thanking the Lane Events Center, Event Supervisors and other volunteers, coaches and parents who substituted in for absent volunteers, and all parents and participants for being patient with small problems as they arose. I think it was terrific to be able to have an in-person tournament again and hope you enjoyed your time! If you are feeling extra-appreciative and would like to help out, please consider donating using our “Event Sponsorship” option or by searching Oregon Science Olympiad on Benevity.org.
